Course Equivalencies & Approvals
Undergraduate students can look up approved transfer credit equivalencies, including credit earned through AP & IB exams, in the Transfer & International Education Course Reporting System. Institutions and courses will continue to be added as they are evaluated and equivalencies are established. Courses that do not appear in the database are not necessarily unacceptable for transfer.
Conversion to Quarter Credit Hour Equivalents
Transferred credit hour values are based on the values assigned by the originating institution. Semester hours are multiplied by 1.5 to convert them to quarter hours. Other formulae are used when the originating institution does not follow a standard quarter or semester calendar.
Conversion of transferred credit hours may result in fractional credits; for example, 3 semester credit hours converts to 4.5 quarter credit hours. These fractional equivalents are not rounded up or down.
Transferability and Course Equivalency Determination Authority
Initial transferability decisions are made by the Office of the Registrar. Approved transfer credits apply toward the overall credits needed to meet degree requirements and do not necessarily guarantee or result in equivalency with specific DU courses or requirements. Final authority on credit transferability and determination of course equivalency rests with the appropriate academic departments.
AP & IB Credit
The college will award up to 45 total quarter hours of transferred Advanced Placement (AP) and Higher Level International Baccalaureate (IB) credit. To review credit earned from an exam, refer to the AP and IB credit guidelines. For additional information and/or questions regarding AP or IB credit, contact registrar@dos5.net.
Approvals
Courses listed in the Transfer & International Education Course Reporting System do not require additional departmental approval. For coursework not listed in the database, students must obtain approval via the Request Coursework Approval page on My4D.
Continuing students seeking to transfer credit into the University of Denver must abide by the transfer policy, including residence and concurrent registration restrictions, and obtain approval in advance from a credential evaluator in the Office of the Registrar.
New students who are not satisfied with their transfer evaluation must obtain departmental approval via the Request Coursework Approval page in My4D in order to make any changes. Such situations include:
- A course they believe should transfer that did not.
- A course that was transferred as an elective that they believe should count towards their major/minor.
- A course that was transferred as an elective that they believe should fulfill a common curriculum requirement.
- A course that was transferred as an elective they believe has an equivalent at the University of Denver.
